Must-Visit Heritage Site in Pune: Shinde Chhatri Honors Maratha Icon Mahadji Shinde with Grandeur and Legacy
This 18th-century memorial in Pune stands as a symbol of Maratha pride, valor, and heritage.
Shinde Chhatri, located in the Wanawadi area of Pune, India, is a magnificent memorial dedicated to Mahadji Shinde, a prominent 18th-century Maratha military leader. Serving as the commander-in-chief of the Maratha army under the Peshwas between 1760 and 1780, Mahadji played a pivotal role in resurrecting Maratha power in North India following the devastating Third Battle of Panipat in 1761.
Built in the Anglo-Rajasthani architectural style, the memorial stands at the site where Mahadji was cremated in 1794. Initially, the site housed only a Shiva temple, which Mahadji himself had constructed. The temple, featuring black stone for the sanctum base and yellow stone for its idols, reflects an ornate Rajasthani temple style with a tall spire topped with a kalash and surrounded by smaller spires.
In 1965, Mahadji’s descendant, Madhavrao Scindia, added the memorial structure next to the temple, transforming the area into a heritage complex. The site is now managed by the Shinde Devasthan Trust of Gwalior.
The interior of Shinde Chhatri is richly adorned with orange and green detailing, royal chandeliers, spiral staircases, and stained-glass windows, set against a floor of simple black and white geometric patterns. The exterior, made of yellow sandstone, features intricate carvings, statues, and ornate pillars.
Upon entering the complex through its tall stone gate, visitors are greeted by a statue of Mahadji Shinde carved in black stone. The site also houses a picture gallery featuring portraits of various Scindia dynasty members, chronicling the lineage and legacy of one of the Maratha Empire’s most influential families.
Located just 6 km from Pune Railway Station and 13 km from Pune Airport, Shinde Chhatri remains one of the city’s most revered historical landmarks, a living reminder of the Maratha spirit and its enduring architectural grandeur.
