Mysterious Circular Water Formation Spotted in Arabian Sea Near Gujarat Coast, Fishermen Alarmed
Palghar | January 20, 2026: A mysterious and unusual marine phenomenon has been reported in the Arabian Sea near the Gujarat coast, triggering concern among fishermen and local authorities. Videos showing rapidly swirling water and bubbling formations—appearing as large circular rings on the sea surface—have gone viral, raising questions about their origin and potential risks.
The incident dates back to January 11, when a fishing boat named ‘Om Namah Shivay’, owned by Vasai-based fisherman Krishna Morlikhandya from Pachubunder, encountered the unusual water movement while out at sea for fishing. The boat reportedly came in contact with the phenomenon around 66 nautical miles from the coast.
Fishermen Capture Rare Visuals
According to fishermen onboard, the sea water appeared muddy in colour and was rotating rapidly in a large circular motion. For a brief period, the fishing vessel was caught in the strong current. Acting swiftly, the crew increased engine speed and managed to steer the boat out safely. Videos recorded at the time show the sea surface bubbling intensely, resembling boiling water.
Even a week after the incident, no agency has been able to confirm the exact cause of the phenomenon, leading to growing anxiety among fishing communities in the region.
Possible Causes Under Investigation
Palghar District Disaster Management Cell chief Vivekanand Kadam described the incident as highly unusual and said it requires a detailed investigation. He stated that possible reasons could include gas leakage from the seabed, underwater geological activity, or leakage from a submarine pipeline. Maritime authorities have been alerted, and ships as well as fishing vessels operating in the area have been advised to exercise caution.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of the Fisheries Development Department, Dinesh Patil, said the incident was immediately reported to the Indian Navy, the Coast Guard, and the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO). “It has been clarified that this is not related to any earthquake activity. There is a possibility that the phenomenon is linked to an ONGC gas pipeline, but no confirmed information is available yet,” he said.
Need for Scientific Assessment
Experts believe the unusual sea activity may be linked to an underwater pipeline, but confirmation would require a detailed geophysical study. Acting Chief Scientist of CSIR–NIO, Dr. Sonia Sukumaran, has written to the Fisheries Department recommending a thorough investigation and scientific assessment of the site.
Authorities have been urged to expedite the inquiry and share clear information with the public to dispel fear among fishermen and prevent potential maritime accidents in the future.
