19 June 2026: A 41-year-old woman was killed, and an elderly couple was seriously injured after an electric car reportedly went out of control and hit pedestrians and two-wheelers in Mumbai’s Vile Parle East on Wednesday evening.

The accident took place near the Vile Parle market area and railway station junction on K.S. Khadye Road between 5.45 pm and 6 pm.

According to police, the electric car suddenly accelerated and first hit a woman who was shopping for vegetables. The vehicle then struck an elderly couple walking nearby and crashed into parked two-wheelers.

The deceased has been identified as Kinzal Hiren Shah (41), a resident of Vile Parle East. She had stepped out to buy vegetables and household items shortly before the accident.

She was rushed to Babasaheb Gawde Charitable Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

The injured victims have been identified as Premji Dongia (67) and his wife Nirmala Dongia. The couple was returning home after visiting relatives when the car allegedly hit them from behind.

After receiving primary treatment, both were shifted to Cooper Hospital for further medical care. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver, Vilas Gadhankar (44), may have accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to speed forward uncontrollably.

Police said Gadhankar is a professional driver but had limited experience driving electric vehicles. The regular driver was unavailable, and he had been asked to operate the car on the day of the incident.

A 75-year-old woman, believed to be the vehicle owner’s mother, was seated in the rear seat at the time of the crash and escaped unharmed.

A shop owner near the accident site said the vehicle suddenly sped towards the roadside.

“I was inside the shop when I heard a loud noise. The car hit a woman and then crashed into a meter box outside,” the eyewitness told police.

Vile Parle police reached the spot soon after the accident and seized the vehicle. The driver has been arrested, and a case has been registered against him.

Officials said there was no immediate indication that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. However, blood samples have been sent for testing as part of the investigation. Police are continuing to probe the exact circumstances that led to the fatal accident.
