Pune | Baner: A 37-year-old electrician from Indapur was arrested on Sunday night by Baner police for allegedly posing as a politician and cheating an eyewear store out of ₹85,271.

The accused, identified as Siddhant Patil alias Zende from Mhasobachiwadi, Indapur, visited the eyewear shop at Baner Phata on April 20. Dressed in a crisp white shirt and black trousers, he acted like an influential political figure, constantly speaking on the phone and pretending to talk to top leaders.

According to a report in Times Of India, senior inspector said Zende told the shopkeeper, Adinath More (24), that he couldn’t make online or cash payments as his house was recently raided by the Enforcement Directorate. He claimed he could only pay by cheque.

He then bought multiple branded spectacles and sunglasses worth ₹85,271 and handed over a cheque, which later bounced due to insufficient funds. The shopkeeper approached the police with a complaint on Sunday, and Zende was arrested the same night.

Police investigations revealed Zende has a criminal past. A case under the Negotiable Instruments Act has been filed against him in Gurgaon, and he also faces cheating and other charges at Bhigwan and Walchandnagar police stations.
