Pune: Palkhi of Sant Tukaram Maharaj to Begin June 18 from Dehu, Reach Pandharpur on July 6
The revered Palkhi procession of Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj, a hallmark of Maharashtra’s spiritual heritage, will embark on its 340th annual pilgrimage from Dehu on June 18. The 19-day journey—popularly known as the Pandharpur Wari—will culminate in Pandharpur on July 6, coinciding with Ashadhi Ekadashi, a significant day for Warkari devotees.
Carrying the sacred paduka (footwear) of Sant Tukaram, the Palkhi is followed by thousands of Warkaris who walk the route, singing abhangas (devotional hymns) and upholding a centuries-old tradition of bhakti. The procession makes scheduled halts at temples and villages along the way, providing space for prayer and rest.
Traditional highlights such as the Gol Ringan and Ubhe Ringan—ritualistic circular performances by devotees and horses—bring added spiritual vibrancy to the journey.
This year, due to changes in the lunar calendar, the Anthurne halt has been cancelled. Instead, the procession will pause for an hour at Shindawane Chowk after crossing Loni Kalbhor. The Palkhi will be managed by Ganesh Maharaj More, Vaibhav Maharaj More, and Dilip Maharaj More, under the guidance of Jalindar Maharaj More, President of Dehu Sansthan.
After reaching Pandharpur, the Palkhi will stay until July 10, allowing devotees additional time for spiritual activities. The return leg will commence thereafter, with the Palkhi expected to reach Dehu again on July 21. The Pandharpur Wari remains one of the world’s most celebrated spiritual pilgrimages, known for its scale, discipline, and devotional intensity.
