New Delhi To Witness First-Ever Artificial Rain On October 29 As Cloud Seeding Trial Succeeds In Burari
New Delhi, October 24, 2025: Delhi is set to experience its first-ever artificial rainfall as part of a pioneering cloud-seeding project, following a successful trial conducted in the Burari area, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Thursday.
The initiative, developed jointly by IIT Kanpur and the Delhi government, aims to reduce particulate pollution levels in the capital through controlled artificial rainfall. “Preparations have been completed to induce artificial rain through cloud seeding, marking a significant technological milestone in Delhi’s fight against air pollution,” Gupta said in a post on X.
According to the Delhi weather department, cloudy conditions are expected between October 28 and 30. If favourable, the city could witness artificial rain on October 29.
The trial involved a seeding flight from IIT Kanpur across Meerut, Khekra, Burari, Sadakpur, Bhojpur, and Aligarh, deploying cloud-seeding flares using pyro techniques to assess system capability, aircraft endurance, and inter-agency coordination.
The project, approved by 23 government departments including the DGCA, will conduct multiple trials until November 30. It is being carried out in collaboration with experts from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD), following strict safety and air traffic protocols.
Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa lauded the initiative as a scientific approach to balancing the capital’s environment and controlling winter pollution.
