Pune: The search for a suitable site for the installation of two radars for the purpose of weather observation by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune is expected to be completed shortly.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, KS Hosalikar, Head of Climate Research and Services, IMD Pune said, “We have identified two areas for installation of radars which will suit the various parameters needed to install radars. Usually, for the Pune district, the distance till which the weather is required to be mapped is around 100 km. Hence, 2 locations have been identified. These two radars will help fine-tune the weather forecast for Pune and the surrounding areas.”

As per further information, the Ministry of Earth Sciences has plans to expand the number of weather forecast radars in the country from 33 currently to 55 within the next 2 years. In order to be effective, these radars must possess certain characteristics, including non-interference with radio frequencies, elevation, etc.

Hence, to increase the efficiency & accuracy of weather observations, predictions, mapping, etc., the IMD Pune has sought to install 2 new radar systems in the Pune District.
