Janata Dal United (JD(U)), led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has officially withdrawn its support from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Manipur. The move, which could be a setback for the BJP, follows a formal letter issued by the party. JD(U) currently has only one MLA, Mohd Abdul Nasir, representing Lilong constituency in the Manipur Assembly.

Earlier, JD(U) had six members in the state legislature, but five of them merged with the BJP in September 2022. JD(U)’s Manipur president, Kshetrimayum Biren Singh, confirmed the withdrawal, stating that the party would now treat its lone MLA, Mohd Abdul Nasir, as an opposition member in the Assembly.

The letter issued by JD(U) read: “It is hereby reiterated that Janata Dal (United), Manipur Unit, does not support the BJP-led state government in Manipur, and our lone MLA, Md. Abdul Nasir, shall be treated as an opposition MLA in the House.”

Despite JD(U)’s exit, the BJP is unlikely to face any immediate threats to its rule in the state, as the party holds a clear majority in the Assembly.

This withdrawal comes shortly after other political shifts in Manipur. In November 2024, the National People’s Party (NPP), led by Conrad Sangma, pulled out of the BJP-led coalition, citing the failure of the state government to resolve ongoing ethnic violence. Additionally, in August 2023, the Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) also ended its alliance with the BJP, citing similar concerns over the state’s ethnic unrest.

The JD(U)’s decision adds to the growing instability for the BJP in Manipur, but the party remains in power with a majority.
