Pune, May 23: The Maharashtra Transport Department has once again extended the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on older vehicles, giving vehicle owners time until June 30, 2026, to comply with the rule.
Despite multiple deadline extensions over the past year, a large number of vehicle owners across the state are yet to install HSRP plates. Transport authorities have now announced that strict action will begin from July 1 against vehicles that fail to comply.

Officials stated that vehicles without HSRP may face restrictions on several important transport-related services, including transfer of ownership, hypothecation removal or updates, re-registration, permit renewals, and approval for vehicle modifications. In addition, violators may be fined ₹1,000 under the Motor Vehicles Act.
The Transport Department clarified that vehicle owners who complete the online registration process before June 30 will not face penalties, even if they receive installation appointments after the deadline.
The HSRP rule applies to all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. Vehicles registered after this date already come equipped with factory-fitted high-security number plates.
According to officials from the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), over nine lakh vehicles in the Pune region have already installed HSRP plates, while many others are still pending.
Citizens can apply for HSRP installation through the Maharashtra Transport Department’s official portal. Authorities have also introduced a grievance system to address complaints and technical issues related to the process.
Pune Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale urged citizens not to wait until the last moment and complete the registration process at the earliest.
Meanwhile, transport associations have raised concerns regarding long waiting periods for appointments and increasing incidents of online fraud linked to fake HSRP booking assistance. Transport representative Baba Shinde has demanded dedicated help centres to assist citizens with registrations and avoid scams.
