No Link Between Covid-19 Vaccines and Sudden Deaths, Says Health Ministry
As concerns grow over sudden, unexplained deaths, particularly among young adults, the Union Health Ministry has clarified that multiple studies have found no direct connection between Covid-19 vaccinations and such incidents. The ministry’s response comes in light of recent concerns raised in Karnataka, where 20 sudden heart attack deaths were reported in Hassan district within a month.
ICMR and NCDC Studies Rule Out Vaccine Link
The Health Ministry referred to investigations by national agencies, including the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), to address public concerns. “Studies by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) affirm that Covid-19 vaccines in India are safe and effective, with extremely rare instances of serious side effects. Sudden cardiac deaths can result from a wide range of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, pre-existing conditions, and post-Covid complications,” the ministry said in a statement.
Two key studies were conducted to examine the issue. One was a multicentric case–control study led by ICMR’s National Institute of Epidemiology, while the other is a prospective study currently being conducted by AIIMS, New Delhi. The first study, conducted across 47 hospitals in 19 states and UTs from May to August 2023, focused on healthy individuals aged 18–45 who died suddenly between October 2021 and March 2023.
“The findings have conclusively shown that Covid-19 vaccination does not increase the risk of unexplained sudden death in young adults,” the Health Ministry noted.
Heart Attacks and Genetics Identified as Key Causes
The second ongoing study, titled “Establishing the cause in sudden unexplained deaths in young,” is supported by ICMR and being conducted by AIIMS. Early data suggests that heart attacks, or myocardial infarctions, continue to be the leading cause of sudden deaths in the 18–45 age group. The ministry added, “No major changes in the pattern of causes have been observed when compared with previous years. In a majority of the unexplained death cases, genetic mutations have been identified as a possible cause.”
Warns Against Misleading Claims
Amid ongoing speculation, the Health Ministry has urged people not to link Covid-19 vaccines with sudden deaths without evidence. “Scientific experts have reiterated that statements linking Covid vaccination to sudden deaths are false and misleading, and are not supported by scientific consensus. Speculative claims without conclusive evidence risk undermining public confidence in vaccines, which have played a crucial role in saving millions of lives during the pandemic,” the statement said.
