Mumbai, March 17, 2026: Concerns over the implementation of the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana were raised in the Maharashtra Assembly on Monday, with BJP MLA Babanrao Lonikar alleging that several patients are not receiving the full benefits under the scheme.

Lonikar questioned Shiv Sena MLA and Health Minister Prakash Abitkar over a case from his constituency, where a patient requiring bypass surgery was reportedly denied adequate financial support under both the Mahatma Phule scheme and the Ayushman Bharat Scheme.

Highlighting the issue, Lonikar cited the example of a farmer, Vitthal Kadam, who requires a bypass surgery costing approximately ₹11 lakh. He stated that while the combined benefit under central and state schemes amounts to ₹6 lakh, the patient was allegedly sanctioned only ₹1 lakh. Due to this shortfall, the surgery has reportedly been delayed for two months.

“The surgery cannot be performed with ₹1 lakh. Despite provisions of ₹3 lakh each from the Centre and the state, only ₹1 lakh has been approved. Will the government ensure the full ₹6 lakh benefit is provided?” Lonikar asked in the House.

Responding to the concerns, Minister Abitkar clarified that under the scheme, there is no requirement for patients to pay for bypass or other listed surgeries, as rates are predefined and covered. He asserted that charges were increased after integration with Ayushman Bharat, ensuring comprehensive coverage.

“If any hospital is not adhering to the scheme guidelines or demanding money from patients, provide the details and strict action will be taken immediately,” Abitkar assured.

The minister also urged legislators to ensure effective implementation of the scheme across primary health centres, rural hospitals, and sub-district hospitals in their respective constituencies.

The issue was raised during the ongoing Maharashtra Assembly session, bringing attention to gaps in the execution of key public healthcare schemes.
