"No One Like You": Kareema Barry Reflects on Her Special Bond With Her Mumbai Landlord – Watch the Heartwarming Video
Finding a home in a city like Mumbai is never easy, especially for young people from Gen Z who are stepping out on their own for the first time. The process can be stressful: landlords, brokers, and apartment owners often ask personal questions like “Are you single or married?” or “What is your profession?” and judge potential tenants based on habits, lifestyle, or schedule. For many, it can feel like a constant struggle to find a place where they are genuinely welcomed.
For content creator and actor Kareema Barry, this stressful journey turned into a heartwarming story of care and connection, thanks to her landlord, whom she fondly calls “Deepak uncle.” In a recent Instagram video, Barry reflected on nearly ten years of living in Mumbai and how Deepak uncle made her first home in the city feel warm and supportive.
Unlike most landlords, Deepak welcomed Barry without judgment. He didn’t care about her identity, religion, profession, or schedule, making the apartment feel less like a rental and more like a true home. His kindness helped Barry feel safe, valued, and comfortable living independently in a city that can often feel overwhelming and lonely.
Barry also recalled small gestures that made life in the flat special, like Sindhi curry meals sent without asking and terrazzo flooring that reminded her of her Kolkata roots. She often visited Deepak’s daughter, who is a dentist, for dental check-ups — a routine part of life in the apartment, rather than a personal favor. She also mentioned Rajkumar, the building guard, whose vigilance ensured the safety and comfort of guests.
Over the years, the flat became a space for personal milestones and growth. Barry spent birthdays, painted, adopted a cat, nurtured friendships, attended auditions, and created memories that made the apartment feel like a true home. These experiences helped her feel supported and never lonely, even while living alone.
Barry highlighted that Deepak disliked being called a “landlord,” preferring to build genuine personal connections. In a city like Mumbai, where rentals are often transactional, this was a rare and meaningful experience. For Barry, Deepak uncle became like an uncle and father figure, someone whose presence made her home feel welcoming, safe, and full of care.
Leaving the flat was one of the hardest moments for Barry. After nearly a decade, it wasn’t just a living space — it had become a place filled with warmth, memories, and emotional support. Moving out meant leaving a home that had made her feel truly at peace and supported in a busy, fast-paced city.
Though Barry has now moved on, she shared that the flat and her bond with Deepak uncle will always remain special, a reminder that genuine human kindness can transform a rented space into a true home, leaving lasting memories that stay with you forever.
