Ola Electric has made a bold entry into the e-motorcycle market with the launch of its ‘Roadster’ series, starting at an attractive price of ₹74,999. The launch, announced at the company’s ‘Sankalp 2024’ event by CEO Bhavish Aggarwal, marks a significant step in Ola’s mission to lead the electric vehicle (EV) revolution in India.

A Trio of Variants to Suit Every Rider

The Roadster series includes three distinct variants: the Roadster, Roadster X, and Roadster Pro, each offering various sub-variants to cater to a wide range of customer preferences. The Roadster Pro, which will be available starting from Diwali next year, is set to be Ola’s premium offering, while the Roadster X and Roadster will hit the market in January 2025.

Pricing for the series is competitive, with the 3.5kWh variant priced at ₹1.04 lakhs, the 4.5kWh model at ₹1.19 lakhs, and the 6kWh version at ₹1.39 lakhs. Deliveries for these models are slated to begin in Q4 of the current fiscal year. The Roadster X series, aimed at budget-conscious consumers, offers even more affordable options, with prices starting at ₹74,000 for the 2.5kWh model and going up to ₹99,000 for the 4.5kWh variant.

A Visionary Future for Ola Electric

Speaking at the launch, Bhavish Aggarwal, Chairman and Managing Director of Ola Electric, expressed the company’s ambitious vision for the future. “Today, we reveal the future of Ola across three companies and three distinct segments. Our goal is to make affordable, efficient, and accessible ride experiences a reality across India. In just three years, Ola Electric has gone from a dream to the leading EV company in the country and the largest two-wheeler EV manufacturer globally,” he said.

Aggarwal also highlighted Ola’s technological advancements, announcing the development of the ‘BharatCell,’ a next-generation 4680 battery cell, the first to be built in India. “We’ve filed over 70 patents for this 4680 cell, and it will be integrated into our scooters by Q1 FY26. Manufacturing this cell in India is the holy grail for the EV industry,” he added.

Building Anticipation and Market Dominance

The launch of the Roadster series follows weeks of anticipation, fueled by teasers on social media and a video of Aggarwal riding the upcoming e-motorcycle. Ola Electric, which delivered its first e-scooter in 2021, has quickly risen to dominate the e-two-wheeler market in India, generating the highest revenue among its peers, according to a report by Redseer.

Despite the challenges in the e-motorcycle segment, which currently represents a small fraction of overall bike sales in India, Ola is confident in its ability to disrupt the market. The company has been focusing on its bike and scooter offerings, recently shelving plans for an e-car to concentrate on these segments.

A Strong IPO and Financial Performance

Ola Electric recently made its public debut, raising over ₹6,000 crore through its IPO. Although the stock experienced volatility, it closed 2.61% higher at ₹110.99 on the NSE on August 14. The company reported a net loss of ₹347 crore for the quarter ended June 30, an increase from the ₹267 crore loss in the same period last year, but saw a 32% rise in revenue to ₹1,644 crore.

Conclusion

Ola Electric’s launch of the Roadster series marks a significant milestone in the company’s journey to lead the EV market in India. With competitive pricing, innovative technology, and a clear vision for the future, Ola is poised to continue its rapid growth and set new standards in the e-motorcycle segment.
