One Year After Porsche Tragedy, Kalyani Nagar Residents Demand Lasting Reforms And Accountability
Pune: As a year passes since the devastating Porsche crash that claimed two young lives, the residents of Kalyani Nagar continue to remember the night that shook their community. On May 16, 2024, a speeding Porsche struck two bikers in a fatal collision that sent shockwaves across the nation.
A year later, the emotional scars remain. The trauma of that night continues to haunt the community, especially parents who now fear for their children’s safety amid the growing menace of unregulated nightlife. While the Pune Police, led by Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, acted promptly in ensuring justice was served, residents argue that the deeper, systemic issues that enabled such a tragedy still persist.
Key grievances highlight persistent and unchecked practices:
1. Unregulated Licensing in Residential Areas:
Pubs and bars continue to receive licenses to operate in residential zones, raising serious concerns about infrastructure strain and community safety. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Excise Department have been criticized for ignoring the long-term implications.
2. Lack of Parking Infrastructure:
Many establishments operate without designated parking, leading to frequent traffic congestion and increased risk for pedestrians and residents alike.
3. Illegal Alcohol Service:
Residents allege that alcohol is often served beyond the legal permit areas. Some establishments function as makeshift discotheques without adhering to regulatory norms, with little to no oversight.
4. Temporary Enforcement Post-Accident:
While illegal encroachments were removed after the accident, many returned within days, exposing the lack of sustained action and follow-through by authorities.
5. Rise in Underage Drinking and Drunk Driving:
Despite the high-profile nature of the tragedy, underage drinking and driving incidents continue to surface, indicating insufficient deterrence.
6. Women’s Safety at Stake:
Late-night altercations and unruly behavior outside pubs pose a growing threat to women’s safety in the area.
In an emotional appeal, the residents are urging authorities to prioritize public safety over commercial interests. They are demanding a thorough review of all bar and pub licenses in residential zones, regular enforcement of permit rules, and permanent action against violators.
“This is not just a complaint — it’s a plea for peace, justice, and the right to feel safe in our own homes,” residents emphasized.
