PUNE: In a move to enhance crowd control and passenger safety, the Pune railway administration has announced that only passengers with confirmed or RAC (reservation against cancellation) tickets will be allowed direct entry onto platforms. Those with waiting lists or general tickets will be required to wait in a designated area before boarding.

Authorities have identified four locations for the waiting areas, including an open space near the VIP section and another near platform six. This initiative is part of a larger directive by the Railway Board, which aims to implement similar crowd control measures at 60 major railway stations across India.

Strict Monitoring and Special Queues for General Ticket Holders

According to Swapnil Neela, Chief Public Relations Officer, Central Railway (CR), Pune railway station sees a high volume of passengers, especially during peak travel periods. “With special trains experiencing heavy footfalls, Pune station has been included in the implementation of this decision,” he said.

Passengers without confirmed tickets will be able to purchase general tickets within the waiting area after confirmed ticket holders have boarded their respective coaches. A dedicated queue for waiting list and general ticket holders will be managed by ticket inspectors and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, ensuring orderly boarding.

Urgent Need for Implementation

Anand Saptarshi, member of the Regional Advisory Committee, CR, emphasized the urgency of setting up the waiting areas. “With increasing passenger numbers, it is crucial to implement this system immediately to avoid overcrowding and potential safety hazards,” he stated.

Apart from Pune, the restriction will also be enforced at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, and Nagpur railway station as part of a nationwide effort to streamline railway operations.
