In a significant stride to alleviate the challenges faced by the families of deceased Indian citizens abroad, a novel initiative called the ‘Open e-CARe Platform’ has been launched.

This collaborative effort by various airlines aims to expedite the repatriation process, ensuring that the deceased can be brought back to their homeland without unnecessary delays. Effective from Thursday, this platform simplifies the application and approval process, promising a swifter and more efficient return of the mortal remains.

The passing away of an Indian citizen on foreign soil often entails a protracted and intricate procedure for repatriating the body, sometimes spanning over a week or more. In cases involving unusual circumstances, this period can further extend, at times necessitating intervention by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. Recognizing the need to streamline and hasten the repatriation process, significant strides have now been taken in this direction.

Unveiling the ‘Open e-CARe’ Platform

The ‘Open e-CARe’ platform is a collaborative endeavor involving multiple airlines. Its primary objective is to ensure the swift return of deceased Indian citizens from abroad to India. To achieve this, the family members of the deceased are required to initiate an application through this platform. Once the application and essential documents are verified, the process of repatriating the body will be initiated promptly.

Seamless Workflow

Functioning as a dedicated department, the ‘Open e-CARe’ platform will be inaugurated at the Delhi airport. This digital infrastructure will interconnect all airports across the nation, creating a seamless and efficient workflow. After the family submits the application, the responsibility of coordinating information and arrangements with the concerned authorities will rest with the respective airlines.

Required Documentation

To facilitate the expedited repatriation process, the following documents will be required:

  1. Death certificate
  2. Embalming certificate, confirming the completion of the embalming process
  3. NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the Indian Embassy
  4. Certificate of passport cancellation of the deceased individual

Relief from Protracted Delays

The introduction of the ‘Open e-CARe Platform’ comes as a respite for families who have encountered substantial difficulties due to the prolonged procedures associated with repatriation. With an average of six to seven instances of Indian citizens’ deaths abroad being reported monthly, the need for a streamlined and efficient process became imperative. Previously, the validation of applications and documents relied on email correspondence, leading to considerable delays in obtaining approvals from various departments. However, this new platform, operated by airlines, promises a more seamless and expeditious repatriation experience for grieving families.
