Operation Kaveri : 160 workers from Pune stranded in Rabak, Sudan, seeking help from govt

Pune: Over 160 workers from Pune and neighboring areas are currently stranded in Rabak, Sudan, where they have been working at the Kenana Sugar Company for the past few years.

The workers have reported that due to the ongoing political crisis in Sudan, their work has been severely affected, and the company management has failed to provide them with any support.

 They are facing several difficulties in Sudan, including a shortage of food and water, and are in urgent need of assistance. The workers have said that they have no choice but to walk 1100 km to the Sudan port as their company management has failed to provide them with any assistance.

Uttam Narayan Patil, from Kalewadi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad city who has been working in Sudan for the past 29 years, has stated that due to the lack of response from the company management, they have ceased work. The political situation in Sudan has left many people stranded and living in fear and tense situations, uncertain if they will be able to reunite with their families. However, after repeated attempts, the company management has called for a meeting with the workers, and they are waiting for positive outcomes.

Madhukar Gaikwad is a 58-year-old resident of Navi Sangvi who has worked for various companies in Sudan over the last 25 years. He now serves as Pan Incharge at Kenana Sugar Company. Gaikwad expressed his concern about the uncertain future in Sudan, stating that although they are currently safe, there are limited options available to them. He appealed to the Indian government for assistance in evacuating them from Sudan.

India has launched ‘Operation Kaveri’ to bring back its citizens stranded in war-torn Sudan, and the Indian embassy in Sudan is reportedly working to provide the necessary support to the workers.
