Following an increase in action against citizens involved in illegal waste dumping, the PMC’s solid waste management department has sent notices to over 80 sanitary staffers of the civic body responsible for waste collection and management for failing to dispose of waste within their jurisdictions.

These sanitary staff members have been requested by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) department to increase their daily monitoring in an effort to make sure that trash is removed from public areas on a daily basis and to take legal action against those who dump waste illegally.

Following unexpected visits by officials throughout the city, staff members received these notices. According to a PMC official, the goal is to encourage employees to step up their watch and take more aggressive action against public offenders. Maintaining the cleanliness of the city is everyone’s duty, including the employees. Sanitary inspectors will continue to be observed by PMC, and staff members who behave inappropriately will receive warnings.

Since the beginning of December, the municipal administration has stepped up its efforts to prevent trash and littering in public areas. There are currently over 5,500 cases against waste dumping, littering, and garbage burning on record.

However, residents of different parts of the city noted that garbage piles are still visible in many open areas and along most streets, in spite of this action taken against its own employees.

According to a Hadapsar resident, PMC must react quickly to complaints regarding waste removal. A number of places beside canals have turned into dumps for trash. PMC doesn’t carry out consistent, ongoing drives. These areas need to be cleaned of the trash.

According to a PMC solid waste management department official, local ward offices have been directed to give priority attention to any and all complaints of this nature. Citizens frequently complain about receiving a delayed response in this regard. They are addressing the problem and looking for any oversights. The sanitary staff members are required to pick up trash each day.
