Padma Shri Awardee Muralikant Petkar Honored In Qatar
Padma Shri awardee and India’s first Paralympic gold medalist, Muralikant Petkar, was recently felicitated by the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) and Maharashtra Mandal Qatar (MMQ) at the prestigious Ashoka Hall in Qatar. A true symbol of resilience, Petkar’s incredible journey—from serving in the Indian Army and enduring eight bullet injuries during the war to winning gold for India at the 1972 Paralympics—continues to inspire generations.
Nandini Abbagouni, ICC’s Head of Cultural Activities, welcomed the dignitaries and audience, while MMQ MC Amruta Patil skillfully anchored the program. ICC Vice President Subramanya Hebbagelu expressed gratitude to Petkar for being a source of inspiration for Indian youth. MMQ President Rakesh Wagh highlighted the various activities conducted by MMQ. Other members of the ICC managing committee, members of MMQ managing committee, associate organization presidents, senior community leaders, and a large number of representatives from the Indian diaspora were also present on the occasion. Mrs. Gargy Vaidya from ICC delivered the vote of thanks.
During his visit, Petkar interacted with the Indian diaspora, sharing his experiences and motivating the youth to pursue excellence with determination. Accompanying him was his son, Arjun Petkar, who is actively involved in nurturing young sports talent. Together, they shared valuable insights, encouraging attendees to support and mentor budding athletes.
The duo also visited the 321 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, where Petkar’s remarkable achievements are proudly showcased. Expressing his heartfelt gratitude to Qatar’s Olympic and sports authorities, Petkar acknowledged the honor of being recognized globally for his contributions to sports.
Their visit left an indelible mark, celebrating the spirit of sportsmanship, perseverance, and inspiration.
