Due to an increased demand for power, the Lonikand 400 kV Extra High Voltage (EHV) substation of Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (Mahatransco) experienced an additional load.

As a precautionary measure to prevent overloading and a potential shutdown of the Lonikand substation, the power supply to certain substations of Mahatransco operating at 132 kV and 220 kV was temporarily suspended.

As a result, several areas in Pune, including Chinchwad village, Bhosari MIDC, Dighi, Lonikand, Theur, Urali kanchan, and some parts of Chakan such as Nagar Road, Kharadi, Lohegaon, Wadgaon Sheri, and Yerwada, faced a power outage lasting for one to two hours on the afternoon of May 29th.

The situation arose due to the substantial increase in electricity demand, causing the load on the Lonikand 400 kV high voltage substation to exceed its capacity. Consequently, the 400 kV tower line connecting the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) to Lonikand suffered damage.

To prevent the Lonikand substation from being overwhelmed by the excessive load and potentially leading to a complete shutdown, the power supply to Kharadi, Theur, Yawat, Chinchwad, and Chakan substations of Mahatransco was automatically halted as a precautionary measure.

As a result, load shedding had to be implemented for one to two hours in the afternoon on the power lines of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) originating from these high-pressure substations.

Specifically, areas such as Kharadi, Nagar Road, Chandannagar, Kalyaninagar, Wadgaon Sheri, Vimannagar, Yerwada, and Lohegaon, under the Nagar Road Division, experienced load shedding from 2:25 pm to 3:27 pm in Pune city.

Between 3:05 pm and 5:05 pm, load shedding was carried out in Bhosari MIDC, Bhosari Gaonthan, and Dighi areas under the Bhosari division. Similarly, from 3:05 pm to 4 pm, load shedding affected Chinchwad Village, Ravet, Walhekarwadi, Tathwade, Punavale, Thergaon, Wakad, and some parts of Pimpri.

In the Mulshi division, load shedding occurred from 2:24 pm to 3:50 pm in Perne, Uralikanchan, Koregaon Mool, Lonikand, Theur villages, as well as certain parts of Pimpri. Additionally, load shedding was implemented from 3:33 pm to 4:16 pm in industrial areas of Kurhli, Nanekarwadi, Chimbli, Nighoje, Khalumbre, and Alandi Phata, situated in Chakan under the Rajgurunagar division.
