Actor and singer Prashant Tamang, best known for winning Indian Idol Season 3 and for his performance in Pataal Lok, has passed away at the age of 43. He was found dead at his residence in New Delhi on January 11, 2026. Early reports suggest a sudden heart attack, although medical confirmation is still awaited.

The news was confirmed by filmmaker Rajesh Ghatani. Singer Mahesh Sewa, based in Darjeeling, also stated that Tamang reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest.

Tamang rose to nationwide recognition in 2007 after becoming the first Gorkha Indian to win Indian Idol. Tributes flooded social media soon after the news broke. Fans and artists remembered his voice, humility and his cultural impact across India and Nepal. Many highlighted how songs such as Bir Gorkhali and Asare Mahinama became anthems for the community, and how his journey from a Kolkata Police constable to a celebrated artist inspired millions.
