Becomes the first township in Maharashtra to adopt an alternative solution to generate clean air along with massive tree plantation
Pune, July 20, 2026: In a significant step towards integrating innovative environmental technology into urban development, four AlgaeTree units have been installed at Amanora Township in Hadapsar, Pune. The AlgaeTree units were inaugurated at the hands of Nandkumar Ghule in the presence of Aniruddha Deshpande, Managing Director, City Corporation Limited, the developer of Amanora Township. Amanora has over 12 thousand big trees along with about 40 thousand shrubs.
Ghule has made a significant contribution to create this green element at Amanora. With this initiative, Amanora has become the first township in Maharashtra to adopt an alternative solution to generate clear air along with the trees and shrubs.
AlgaeTree is an advanced urban environmental technology that uses microalgae-based biological systems, combined with mechanical filtration, automation and environmental monitoring, to support air purification and carbon capture in dense urban environments. Unlike conventional tree plantation, which requires adequate soil and space, the compact AlgaeTree system is designed to provide environmental support in areas where traditional greenery may be difficult to establish.
The system works by drawing in ambient air, filtering particulate matter and directing carbon dioxide-rich air into a cultivation chamber containing microalgae. Through photosynthesis, the microalgae absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, while the system continuously monitors environmental and operational parameters through sensors and smart technology. AlgaeTree is designed to capture carbon dioxide at a rate significantly higher than an equivalent area of terrestrial trees and has an estimated absorption capacity of up to 1.5 tonnes of CO₂ per year, subject to operating conditions.
The technology also incorporates filtration systems to assist in reducing PM2.5 and PM10 particulate matter. Solar-assisted operation helps reduce dependence on external energy sources, while the system’s compact footprint makes it suitable for urban locations such as residential townships, corporate campuses, commercial complexes, public spaces and smart-city infrastructure.
Speaking on the occasion, Aniruddha Deshpande, Managing Director, City Corporation Limited, said, “Urban development and environmental responsibility must progress together. At Amanora, we have always believed that a modern township should not only provide world-class infrastructure but also explore innovative ways to enhance the quality of the environment. The installation of four AlgaeTree units is an important step in this direction.”
“This technology does not seek to replace natural trees or green spaces; rather, it can complement existing ecosystems and provide additional environmental support in dense urban areas. We hope that initiatives such as this will encourage greater innovation and public participation in building cleaner and more sustainable cities. We intend to take the number of these AlgaeTree to 40 in the months to come in an endeavour to generate clean air at Amanora”, he added.
Developed after more than two years of research, engineering and experimentation, AlgaeTree combines biotechnology with automation and environmental monitoring. The technology has undergone validation by the School of Energy & Environmental Studies (SEES), DAVV, Indore, and re-verification by EKI Energy Services Ltd.
The first real-world AlgaeTree™ pilot installation was deployed in Ashoka Garden, Bhopal. This deployment represents an important milestone in transforming conceptual environmental technology into practical urban infrastructure.
The installation at Amanora Township marks the deployment of the technology in one of Pune’s prominent large-scale urban developments and reflects the growing role of technology-led environmental solutions in creating sustainable urban communities.
