PCMC Inaugurates Rakshak Chowk Subway On Sangvi - Kiwale Road
Pimpri, July 23: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Wednesday inaugurated a new vehicular subway (VUP) at Rakshak Chowk on the Sangvi–Kiwale Road along with a multi-purpose recreation project developed beneath the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Bridge at Sangvi Phata. The projects were inaugurated by MLA Shankar Jagtap.
The civic body said the initiatives are part of its efforts to strengthen the city’s transport infrastructure while creating improved public spaces and civic amenities for residents.
The inauguration ceremony at the Mahatma Phule flyover in Sangvi was attended by H Ward Chairperson Trupti Kamble, Education Committee Chairperson Ravina Angholkar, corporators Dnyaneshwar Jagtap, Shashikant Kadam, Sham Jagtap, Navnath Jagtap and Pallavi Jagtap, along with City Engineer Manoj Sethitha, Joint City Engineer Bapu Gaikwad, Executive Engineer Sunil Pawar, Deputy Engineer Chandrakant More, local social workers and residents.
The recreation project has transformed the previously unused space beneath the bridge into a public facility featuring landscaped gardens, walking paths, seating areas, open spaces, fitness equipment and designated areas for social and cultural activities. Officials said the project has enhanced the aesthetics of the locality while creating a new recreational destination for citizens.
The newly inaugurated vehicular subway at Rakshak Chowk has been constructed to ease congestion on the busy Sangvi–Kiwale Road, which has witnessed increasing traffic due to rapid urban growth.
A separate inauguration programme for the subway was attended by J Ward Chairperson Aarti Chondhe, corporators Adv. Vinayak Gaikwad, Sandeep Kaspate and Sneha Kalate, Additional Commissioner Kuldeep Jangam, Chief Engineer Pramod Ombhase, Joint City Engineer Prerna Shinkar, Executive Engineers Sandhya Wagh and Vijay Bhojne, Deputy Engineer Nilesh Date, civic officials, office-bearers from various departments, social workers and senior citizens.
According to PCMC, the project has been completed at a cost of ₹22.77 crore. The work order was issued on September 6, 2024, and construction was completed on July 10, 2026.
The subway comprises a 26.40-metre-long and 11.40-metre-wide RCC box structure, along with approach ramps on the Sangvi Phata and Jagtap Dairy Chowk sides. A dedicated 26.40-metre-long and 2.50-metre-wide pedestrian walkway has also been developed to ensure safe movement for pedestrians.
The civic body said the subway will enable signal-free traffic movement in both directions on the Sangvi–Kiwale Road, significantly reducing congestion, improving travel time, saving fuel and enhancing road safety.
Speaking after the inauguration, MLA Shankar Jagtap said the development of durable and high-quality infrastructure is essential for the city’s long-term growth. He added that PCMC is committed to making roads safer and congestion-free and will continue to prioritise citizen-centric infrastructure projects in the future.
