PCMC Police Tighten Gun Licensing: Two Licences Cancelled, 58 Applications Rejected
Pune, December 3, 2025: Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinaykumar Choubey has ordered the cancellation of firearm licences of two individuals after investigations revealed negligent handling of weapons and submission of false information. In addition, 58 applicants seeking new gun licences have been denied approval, signalling a stricter enforcement regime in the city’s arms licensing process.
In the first incident, Mayur Gulab Sonawane, a resident of Mahalunge MIDC, accidentally fired a bullet into his own leg while carelessly handling his revolver at home. A case was registered by Mahalunge MIDC Police, following which a proposal to cancel his firearm licence was sent to the Commissioner’s office. The licence has now been officially revoked.
In another case, Pravin Suresh Lukkar from the Chikhali police station limits declared in his affidavit that only one criminal case was registered against him. However, police verification revealed that he had three cases at the Nigdi Police Station and one pending matter before the Pune Sessions Court. He was found guilty of concealing critical information, leading to the cancellation of his licence as well.
Earlier this year, licences of four others — Santosh Dattatray Pawar, Santosh Pandurang Kadam, Dinesh Babulal Singh, and Ganpat Bajirao Jagtap — were also revoked. With the latest action, a total of six licence holders have lost their firearm permits in 2025.
Meanwhile, 41 applicants who applied for new firearm licences in October and November 2025 failed to provide sufficient justification during preliminary scrutiny, leading to rejection of their applications. Another 17 applications had been rejected earlier, bringing the total number of rejections this year to 58.
Officials said Commissioner Choubey’s decisive action reflects a commitment to stricter implementation of firearm regulations, ensuring transparency, accountability, and discipline in the gun licensing process across Pimpri-Chinchwad.
