Pune: In a major relief for residents of Punawale and Pimpri Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Societies Federation (PCCHSF), the state government has decided to cancel the proposed garbage depot at Punawale.

As per information, while speaking during the winter session of Maharashtra’s State Legislature, Minister Uday Samant said that the proposed garbage depot project in Punawale will be cancelled & relocated to some other appropriate location.

Expressing satisfaction & relief, Sachin Londhe, Vice Chairman, Pimpri Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Societies Federation, said that the relocation decision of Proposed Solid Waste Management project by PCMC from Punawale has been issued by Minister Uday Samant during the ongoing winter session in Nagpur Maharashtra Assembly.

He further added that the PCCHSF & Punawale residents had participated in bike rally, ghanta naad, banner protests and a hunger strike being conducted in the last 3 months which was against the proposed Solid Waste Management Garbage disposal project. It is their true victory. This issue was since year 2008 and suddenly the work on this project was initiated in 2023 by PCMC administration. Population of Punawale has grown during these 15 years and it is close to 150,000. Hence, Punawale residents had to come on street against this project and conduct various ways of protests. The PCCHSF then decided to go legal and file a PIL with further guidance from Advocate Satya Muley. He then issued a legal notice to PCMC against this. Response was awaited from PCMC.

Londhe also said that the PCCHSF, Punawalekars, MLA Chinchwad constituency had put forth a cancellation request to the Maharashtra Chief Minister to which Minister Uday Samant has responded positively and cancelled the Punawale solid waste management project.

The real credit goes to local Punawale residents, Sachin Londhe, PCCHSF Vice Chairman, Arun Deshmukh, MLA Ashwini Jagtap, Tushar Kamthe, Advocate Satya Muley and all involved behind this success.
