In a concerted effort to promote waste reduction and environmental sustainability, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is rapidly establishing additional RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Centers across each ward. These centers aim to collect and manage unusable items such as clothes, toys, shoes, slippers, books, and more.

Mahesh Aadhav, Assistant Health Officer of PCMC‘s D Ward, spoke to Pune Pulse about the significance of the ‘Meri Life, Mera Swachh Shahar’ campaign.

He stated, “Aligned with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, we are launching the concept of the three Rs – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, from May 19th to June 5th, which coincides with World Environment Day. The city is currently burdened with mounting waste, escalating day by day. Many items that are commonly discarded can be effectively reduced, reused, or recycled. Therefore, we have initiated this campaign to discourage unnecessary disposal and minimize waste generation.”

Aadhav emphasized that PCMC workers are actively engaged in door-to-door collection drives, raising awareness about waste management and the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle. The response from the community has been encouraging, and RRR Centers have been established in all 32 wards of the PCMC. These centers provide individuals with the opportunity to donate unusable items like toys, shoes, books, clothes, and more. Additionally, the campaign aims to support financially disadvantaged individuals by partnering with various organizations that refurbish and distribute these donated items to those in need.

On behalf of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, the RRR campaign, and the PCMC, Aadhav earnestly appealed to the public to donate their unusable items at these designated RRR Centers promptly and encourage others to do the same.

To date, the PCMC has successfully collected approximately 2,754 kilograms (around 3 tonnes) of recyclable materials, including clothes, toys, electronic items, and more, effectively diverting them from landfills.

The PCMC’s dedicated efforts through the ‘Meri Life, Mera Swachh Shahar’ campaign and the establishment of RRR Centers are crucial steps towards fostering a cleaner and more sustainable environment for the community.
