The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is embarking on a crucial initiative to enhance public safety in the city and its suburbs.
In a bid to safeguard residents from potential electrocution incidents, the PMC’s Electricity Department is replacing old electric poles with Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) “Shock Proof” poles.

Concerns have arisen among Pune residents regarding the necessity and cost-effectiveness of this transition. Some have questioned the rationale behind removing existing electric poles, which are deemed to be in good condition. However, the PMC Electricity Department has shed light on the pressing need for such a change.
Instances of individuals touching or leaning on electric poles have been cited as potential triggers for accidents, particularly during lightning strikes or in areas prone to waterlogging.
Tragically, past incidents of electrocution have underscored the urgency of implementing preventive measures.
With a dedicated allocation of Rs 5 crore 28 lakh, the PMC aims to address these safety concerns by installing shock-proof FRP poles across strategic locations in the city.
The decision to opt for FRP poles was made after careful assessment of existing infrastructure and considering the well-being of Pune’s citizens.
The initial phase of this project will focus on areas such as Aundh, Mhalunge Road, and Soos. By prioritizing the replacement of old and damaged poles, the PMC aims to ensure a seamless transition to safer infrastructure.
