In the bustling city of Pune, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, situated in Katraj, continues to attract many visitors despite the ongoing oppressive heatwave.

With schools out for summer vacation, families are taking advantage of the break to explore the diversity of wildlife housed at this expansive 130-acre facility. The zoo is a cherished green haven in Pune, but also a victim to the scorching summer heat and dried-up water sources. It is cleverly divided into three main sections: an animal orphanage, a snake park and a more traditional zoo setting. This arrangement allows for a varied and enriching experience for all visitors and enthusiasts. Nestled within this green expanse is also the scenic Katraj Lake, although this year it has suffered from the harsh temperatures and dried up.

A Rich Array of Exhibits

The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park boasts a remarkable collection of wildlife, making it one of the city’s top attractions. It is home to an array of reptiles, mammals and birds. Among the stars of the show are a stunning white tiger and a male Bengal tiger, both of whom draw considerable attention and admiration from the visitors.

Reptile enthusiasts have plenty to celebrate at the park. The snake park segment houses an impressive variety of species including Indian rock pythons, cobras, vipers, other snakes and even Indian crocodiles. Each species is provided with a habitat that mimics its natural environment as closely as possible, thus providing an educational as well as entertaining experience to the visitors and a holistic environment which fosters the well-being of these creatures.

The traditional zoo section is no less fascinating, with its assortment of leopards, sloth bears, sambhars, barking deer, blackbucks, monkeys and elephants. These animals are not only a delight to watch but are also part of important conservation efforts being undertaken by the zoo authorities.

Adapting to Climate Challenges

The unprecedented heat has posed significant challenges not only for the visitors but also for the zoo inhabitants. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has embarked on the construction of a sewage treatment plant at Katraj Lake to address the environmental challenges and hopefully restore the lake to its former glory. In response to the rising temperatures, the zoo management has implemented several measures to ensure the well-being of the animals.

Innovations such as sprinklers, foggers, coolers and ponds have been strategically placed around the habitats to help the animals cope with the heat and prevent dehydration and other health issues. These initiatives demonstrate the zoo’s commitment to providing a safe and comfortable environment for its wildlife.

Sustainability Efforts

In a move towards sustainability, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park has also banned the use of single-use plastics within its premises. This decision aligns with global environmental trends, keeping cleanliness in the area for its aesthetic appeal and reflects the zoo’s dedication towards conservation and responsible tourism.

A Must-Visit Destination

Despite the heat, the zoo remains a favourite destination for both locals and tourists. The educational programs and guided tours offered are top-rated, providing valuable insights into the lives of the animals and the ecosystems they inhabit. For many visitors, the chance to see and learn about rare species in such proximity makes for an unforgettable experience.

As the city of Pune continues to grow, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park serves not only as a critical space for wildlife conservation but also as a vital educational and recreational resource for the community. Its ongoing popularity, despite challenging weather conditions, underscores its importance to Pune’s cultural and natural heritage. Even in such harsh weather conditions, people opt to visit the zoo for an enriching experience. Although the lake is being worked upon for the sewage treatment plant and will recover soon, the people await while the zoo supposes patience.

In summary, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park offers a welcome respite from the urban sprawl and a unique educational experience in the heart of Pune. With its diverse array of attractions and proactive measures to combat the heat, the zoo ensures a comfortable and enlightening visit for all, making it a must-visit this summer season.
