The authorities at the Nisargakavi Bahinabai Chaudhari Animal Zoo are trying their best to keep the animals cool by spraying water, providing coolers, table fans and so on. It is managed by the Central Zoo Authority which is under the State Zoo Authority. The animals and birds in the zoo are being treated with the utmost care. The veterinary department of the PCMC has created a chilled atmosphere and come up with various ideas to prevent the animals and birds from suffering from the rising heat.

The veterinary department has set up separate facilities for reptiles, animals and birds. The zoo is home to 13 species of snakes. The reptiles are protected from heat, but the temperature must be kept below 30 degrees centigrade. Water is sprayed twice a day to cool the reptiles in the air. A cooler is installed and so are table fans at four locations to keep the reptiles cool.

One of the unique features of the zoo is that each snake enclosure is kept with water in the form of red earthen pots. The golden sand-absorbing water is kept on the floor which helps in keeping the environment cool. The zoo has 13 snake species including both poisonous and non-poisonous species.

Dr Shailaja Kolekar said, “We have provided water in a red earthen pot for birds and animals. The entire zoo is sprayed from all sides on a daily basis. This reduces the intensity of heat and keeps the environment cool. We are taking good care of the turtle, owl, hawk, hill parrot, crane, duck and peacocks.”

The Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the veterinary department, PMC, Pune talked about providing as much relief as possible to the animals living in the Zoo for the coming three months to protect them from the heat waves of the city. The authorities are doing their best to ensure that the animals are thriving in a cool atmosphere.
