Pune, known for its pleasant climate, is gearing up for scorching temperatures this April. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of a significant rise in mercury levels over the next few days.
Since the beginning of the month, Pune has been experiencing above-normal temperatures, both during the day and at night. According to KS Hosalikar, head of Climate Research and Services at IMD Pune, the city and parts of Central India are expected to witness a surge of 3-4 degrees Celsius in the upcoming days.
Shivajinagar, a prominent area in Pune, is forecasted to reach a scorching 41 degrees Celsius between April 28-30. The recent 24-hour period saw the city’s temperature rise by a staggering 1 degree Celsius, with Shivajinagar hitting 39.5 degrees Celsius on April 25.
Notably, the minimum temperature in Pune has also remained above normal, registering at 22.9 degrees Celsius on April 25.
The current weather pattern is attributed to a cyclonic wind circulation over Marathwada and neighboring Central Maharashtra, coupled with trough lines crossing the region. These conditions might lead to isolated rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in certain areas of Maharashtra.
Residents can expect a partly cloudy sky and isolated rainfall on April 25 and 26 in Pune.
This April has proven to be one of the hottest in Pune since 2013, with an average maximum temperature of 39.4 degrees Celsius. Areas like Magarpatta and Hadapsar have experienced the brunt of the heat, recording even higher average temperatures.
According to IMD data, Magarpatta and Koregaon Park saw average temperatures of 38.8 degrees Celsius between April 1 and April 24. Similarly, Koregaon Park, Wadgaonsheri, and NDA areas averaged 38 degrees Celsius during the same period.
