Pimpri-Chinchwad, May 18, 2026: Residents and housing societies across Pimpri-Chinchwad have strongly opposed the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) over its decision to levy property tax on open amenity spaces within residential complexes, including gardens, playgrounds, jogging tracks, swimming pools and sports courts.

Housing societies from areas such as Bhosari, Borhadewadi, Moshi, Chikhali and Pradhikaran have termed the move an “unreasonable increase” in property tax and said it has significantly raised the financial burden on cooperative housing societies this year.

Residents claimed that until recently, the civic body imposed property tax only on constructed amenity areas such as clubhouses, auditoriums and community halls. However, revised tax assessments issued this year reportedly include open common spaces that do not have permanent structures.

Federation representatives and residents have expressed concern that taxing open recreational areas could discourage societies from maintaining community facilities meant for children, senior citizens and residents.

Sanjeevan Sangale, chairman of the Chikhali Moshi Pimpri-Chinchwad Housing Societies Federation, said gardens and playgrounds are essential community spaces and should not be treated as commercial or revenue-generating assets.

Residents said several housing societies have received substantially higher property tax bills due to the revised calculations. They are now planning to submit a formal representation to the civic administration demanding a rollback of the decision.

Society members across the twin cities are expected to collectively approach civic officials and elected representatives in the coming days to seek relief and clarification over the revised taxation policy.
