From Vada Pav To Tea, Restaurants Begin Raising Prices Amid LPG Cost Surge

Hotels, restaurants and eateries in Mumbai and Pune have started increasing food prices as commercial LPG cylinder rates, edible oil costs and transport expenses continue to rise. Industry bodies warn that menu prices could increase further in the coming weeks.

Restaurants and small eateries across Mumbai and Pune are facing mounting pressure from rising fuel and raw material costs, leading to visible increases in the prices of everyday food items such as vada pav, samosas and tea.

According to hotel and restaurant associations, the latest hike in commercial LPG cylinder prices has significantly increased operational expenses for the hospitality sector. Industry representatives have warned that food prices in hotels and restaurants may rise by another 10 to 15 per cent if fuel and transport costs continue climbing.

Several eateries in Mumbai have already revised their rates upward. Vada pav and samosas that earlier sold for around Rs 15 are now reportedly priced between Rs 18 and Rs 20, while tea prices have increased from Rs 10 to Rs 12 in some establishments.

Industry leaders say the cost burden is coming from multiple directions simultaneously commercial LPG cylinders, edible oil, transportation, imported ingredients and logistics.

President of the Pune Restaurants and Hoteliers Association (Praha), said many restaurants have already begun reducing dependence on gas by shifting partially to induction cooking and pellet firing systems. According to him, establishments that earlier used nearly 90 cylinders a month have reduced usage to nearly 40 in some cases.

Restaurant operators in Pune said the expected increase in petrol, diesel, CNG and LPG prices could further impact deliveries, kitchen operations and procurement costs. Hotel operators are also reportedly stocking up on commercial cylinders and edible oil before revised prices come into effect.

Hospitality industry representatives noted that edible oil prices have already risen sharply in recent weeks. Since India imports a major portion of its edible oil requirements, global disruptions and transport uncertainties are also affecting local food businesses.

Hotel operators in Pune’s IT-heavy areas such as Hinjewadi and Kharadi also pointed to slowing customer footfall due to work-from-home trends, adding to existing financial pressure on restaurants and hotels.

Restaurant owners said online food delivery is likely to become more expensive as rising transport and fuel costs could impact app-based deliveries through companies such as Zomato and Swiggy. Consumers have already started expressing concern over increasing delivery charges, platform fees and surge pricing.

Industry associations have urged the government to intervene and consider relief measures, warning that smaller establishments operating with thin profit margins may struggle to survive if costs continue to rise.

Some hotel and restaurant operators have also warned that continued price pressure could eventually lead to temporary closures, reduced operations and job cuts within the sector.
