Former High Court Judge T V Nalawade, a member of the Shaktipeeth Highway Virodhi Kruti Samiti, announced plans to file a public interest litigation (PIL) this week against the Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Highway. The decision comes amidst concerns over the highway’s constitutionality and alleged lack of adherence to legal procedures.

The proposed 802 km highway is facing opposition due to its potential impact on agriculture, with an estimated 40,000 acres of farmland at risk of destruction. A meeting held by the Shaktipeeth Highway Virodhi Kruti Samiti unanimously agreed to pursue legal action through a PIL.

Former HC judge T V Nalawade emphasized the unconstitutional nature of the highway project, alleging that proper legal procedures were not followed. He criticized the project’s promotion under the guise of religious tourism and public interest, highlighting the adverse effects on farmers’ livelihoods and the environment.

Former MLA Sanjay Ghatge echoed concerns about the highway’s purported benefits, questioning its impact on travel time and asserting that Maharashtra’s farmers should not bear the burden for Goa’s benefit. Another member, B M Hirdeker, suggested redirecting funds allocated for the highway towards drought relief efforts in the state, alleging that the project primarily serves contractor interests.

The decision to file a PIL reflects growing opposition to the Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Highway and underscores concerns about its legality, environmental impact, and allocation of resources.
