In a bold move to reduce air pollution, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has banned the burning of wood and coal in hotels, dhabas, bakeries, and street food vendors. This decision aims to curb the harmful particles and carbon monoxide emitted from these traditional cooking methods, which have been detrimental to citizens’ health and the environment.

The burning of wood and coal has been a long-standing issue in Pimpri-Chinchwad, with numerous complaints regarding air pollution. To address this, the municipal corporation has mandated the use of cleaner energy sources, including LPG gas, electric ovens, biogas, and green gas.

To ensure a seamless transition, establishments have been given six months to comply with the new regulations. They must install chimneys of at least 11 meters for furnaces and 19 meters for ovens, along with dust collector machines.

Failure to comply will result in stringent penalties. First-time offenders will face a fine of Rs 5,000, while second-time offenders will be fined Rs 10,000. Repeat offenders risk having their establishments sealed by the health department.

“This policy is a crucial step towards protecting our citizens’ health and the environment,” said Commissioner Shekhar Singh while talking to media, who approved the Environment Department’s initiative. “We are committed to creating a cleaner, healthier Pimpri-Chinchwad.”

The ban is expected to significantly reduce air pollution in the area, improving the quality of life for residents. With the six-month implementation period underway, establishments are urged to adapt to the new regulations and prioritize environmental sustainability.
