Pune: State-of-the-art CCTV cameras have been installed in the city of Pimpri Chinchwad under the Smart City projects for the safety of the citizens. 

However, complaints were received that the CCTV cameras at important intersections were shut down due to the theft of 100 HA power batteries from the junction boxes installed for CCTV cameras.

As per further information from the press release by Pimpri Chinchwad Police, Commissioner of Police Vinay Kumar Choubey had ordered the crime branch to investigate the said theft. Crime Branch Police Deputy Commissioner Swapna Gore and other police officers and police officials of Crime Branch Unit 2 were constantly searching for thieves.

On October 18, 2023, under the guidance of Police Inspector Jitendra Kadam, the team in charge of Crime Branch Unit 2, six of Unit 2 were patrolling within the limits of Pimpri Police Station conducting parallel investigations of theft crimes and checking criminals on record. Police officials Shivanand Swami and Keraappa Mane received a tip-off that some people were carrying batteries on a motorcycle and hiding them under coal sacks in the open waste area in a slum area of Pimpri.

The team of police officials immediately set a trap in which the accused Onkar Suresh Pawar, Zafar Zaid Siddiqui, Ganesh Bhunga Kamble, and his 3 other minor accomplices were detained. On thorough investigation, the accused confessed to stealing batteries from CCTV Junction from the Sangvi and Nigdi area and stealing motorcycles from the Nigdi and Sangvi area to commit the theft as well.

A total of 4 cases of battery theft and two-wheeler theft have been revealed by the accused and the goods worth Rs 5 lakh rupees have been seized.

The said action was taken under the guidance of Vinay Kumar Choubey, Commissioner of Police, Pimpri Chinchwad, Dr. Sanjay Shinde, Joint Commissioner of Police, Vasant Pardeshi, Upper Commissioner of Police, Swapna Gore, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) and Satish Mane, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime), Jitendra Kadam, Officer in Charge of Crime Branch Unit 2 Police Inspector, Ganesh Mane, Deputy Inspector of Police and Crime Branch Police Constables of Unit 2 Shivanand Swami, Keraappa Mane, Usha Dale, Deva Raut, Atish Kudke, Sagar Avasare, Ajit Sanap, Shivaji Mundhe, Uddhav Khedkar.
