Pune: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding the potential development of a cyclonic storm, Cyclone Tej in the Arabian Sea, which could have an impact on Mumbai, Pune, and the Konkan region.

According to the IMD, a low-pressure area formed over the southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea on October 18. It is expected to move in a west-northwest direction and intensify into a depression by October 21. If this depression further develops into a tropical storm, it will be named ‘Tej’ following the naming convention for cyclones in the Indian Ocean Region. Cyclone formation during October to December is not uncommon in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea due to the higher ocean temperatures. However, at present, the likelihood of this system becoming a cyclonic storm is relatively low.

Furthermore, reports suggest that the cyclonic disturbance may lead to a drop in night temperatures, with temperatures expected to reach around 22°-23° Celsius. Pune will also experience a decrease in temperatures, ranging from 16°-17° Celsius between October 22 and 25. In light of this situation, the IMD has advised fishermen in Maharashtra and south Gujarat to refrain from venturing into the sea. There are indications that the storm may head towards the Gujarat coast, as suggested by certain models.

As per the statement issued by Anupam Kashyapi, the Head of the Weather Forecasting Division, it has been reported that the weather conditions in Pune City today will witness some moisture incursion through easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal. The sky is expected to be partly cloudy with a high temperature of around 34-35°C and a low temperature of 21-22°C. There is a slight possibility of very light rain in isolated areas of the city for a short period.
