The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has taken action against 221 major construction companies for violating environmental regulations, especially concerning air and noise pollution. The city’s construction sector has been rapidly expanding due to industrial growth and increasing residential projects, resulting in rising pollution levels.

A fine of ₹31,48,157 has been levied on the violators, with construction work on three projects halted due to non-payment of penalties. Two projects in Akurdi and one in Wakad have been shut down as a result.

Pimpri-Chinchwad city is experiencing rapid urbanization, leading to an increase in both population and construction activity. However, this growth has raised concerns about noise pollution, water conservation, and waste management. Over the last few months, air and noise pollution issues have become more severe, prompting the municipal administration to issue new guidelines for construction companies. These guidelines include a ban on construction work from 10 PM to 7 AM and require measures to reduce pollution and manage waste.

The authorities found that many construction companies were neglecting their environmental responsibilities, leading to notices being sent to 221 contractors. The highest number of notices (61) were issued by the “D” regional office, where a fine of ₹14,07,300 was collected.

In addition to fines, the PCMC has begun halting construction work in areas where companies have failed to comply with environmental standards, with construction in Wakad and Akurdi being suspended. Sunil Bhagwani, the executive engineer at the Building Permission Department, emphasized that measures are being implemented to prevent air and noise pollution, urging construction companies to adopt proper environmental practices.
