Pune : The Maharashtra government is planning to reintroduce the ‘Pink Rickshaw’ initiative in major cities such as Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Nashik, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nagpur and Thane to improve women’s safety and employment opportunities.

The objective of this endeavour, led by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, is to establish a safer means of transportation specifically for women. Additionally, it aims to generate employment opportunities by introducing e-rickshaws into the system.

What does the ‘Pink Rickshaw’ scheme entail?

At a special meeting held at the Mantralaya on Tuesday, Aditi Tatkare emphasized the practical approach that will be adopted in implementing the ‘Pink Rickshaw’ scheme. An official stated that the plan includes various important elements such as the meticulous selection of beneficiaries, prioritization of e-rickshaws, partnership with banks, and comprehensive training programs.

The meticulous selection of beneficiaries plays a vital role in the scheme, as it aims to empower women from diverse backgrounds and contribute to inclusive economic growth. This process involves carefully choosing individuals who will be entrusted with operating the unique pink rickshaws.

As per sources, the government intends to give preference to e-rickshaws in the implementation of the ‘Pink Rickshaw’ program. An official stated that this decision not only supports the worldwide trend towards sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation but also guarantees a contemporary and effective fleet to enhance the safety and convenience of female passengers.

As per the information received, prominent cities like Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Nashik, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nagpur, and Thane will be encompassed. These metropolitan areas will be utilized as experimental sites to assess the efficiency and feasibility of the program, before any potential expansion to other areas.
