Pune: In a novel approach to combat littering, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is conducting a thorough examination of garbage to identify and penalize those who litter on the streets.

As per information, the PMC will scrutinize documents and bills that have been discarded with the trash. It will take action against individuals who are responsible for improper garbage disposal and littering by tracing them. This innovative measure has resulted in the issuance of penalties.

PMC’s unique method is in line with the ongoing ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ and ‘Swachh Survekshan’ campaigns, which aim to promote cleanliness and discourage public garbage disposal. As part of this initiative, officials from the Kothrud-Bavdhan zonal office search for documents and bills that may reveal the identity of the culprits.

While talking to Pune Pulse, Sandeep Kadam, Solid Waste Department, Head, added, ”35 individuals have been identified and penalized for their negligent actions. Specialized teams conduct daily inspections in the respective wards, commencing at 6:45 a.m. In the event of discovering waste in public areas, the teams meticulously search for any documents or bills that may lead them to the offenders. Equipped with photographs of the discarded items and the relevant documents and bills, the teams have successfully imposed fines ranging from 1500 to 1000 on individuals. This initiative has thus far resulted in a total of 50,700 in fines.”
