The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued notice to Stories Café located on South Main Road in Koregaon Park, instructing it to remove unauthorized construction in the café. However, the café founder has asked for more time than the one mentioned in the notice.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Shyam Konnur, Founder, Stories Café, Koregaon Park said, “The café is an NGO run café. We had very recently started the café. However, the roof of the café was in bad condition as it was about to fall off. So, some days ago, we had put up a temporary shed made of plastic, and net sheets, with some support of metal. Hence, during Christmas time, the PMC had come & instructed us to remove the roof & stuck a notice on the wall.”

Konnur further said, “They gave us only 24 hours to take action on this. However, that much time is not enough as it takes at least one month to either vacate the place & get a new place to run this café or even to get the relevant permissions from the PMC. We have asked the PMC for more time but the PMC told us that they cannot give more time.”

Konnur clarified that they are not against the PMC notice or PMC doing their work, but they are asking for more time, at least one month, to either vacate the place completely & establish the café at some other place or get the required PMC permissions.

As per information from the PMC notice accessed by Pune Pulse, it has been pointed out that construction work has been done in an unauthorized manner at South Main Road, Koregaon Park, Pune as construction of 16 sq m has been done without permission. The cafe has been started by putting up unauthorized sheds in the front yard.

The notice further said that the approximate details of the shed are: Length – 4 m, width – 4 m, area – 16 sq m. For the said work, the necessary permission has not been taken from the Pune Municipal Corporation under Section 44 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act 1966 and Section 253, 254 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act 1949. Accordingly, after receiving this notice, the unauthorized construction should be stopped immediately.

The notice also said that accordingly, within a period of 24 hours from the date of receiving the notice i.e. 24th December 2023, the unauthorized construction as mentioned above should be removed, otherwise the said construction will be razed by the Pune Municipal Corporation. Please note that failure to comply with the notice will entitle the PMC to file a civil or criminal case under the provisions of Section 52 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, and the construction materials and machinery used for unauthorized construction will be confiscated.
