Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation has taken a major step towards improving the city’s cleanliness and environmental condition by leasing 80 new vehicles for garbage collection. The initiative was inaugurated by the Minister of Higher and Technical Education of the State and Guardian Minister of the district, Chandrakant Patil, who expressed his belief that these vehicles will be instrumental in enhancing the city’s beauty and cleanliness.

The vehicles were leased in response to the daily generation of around 2,100 million tonnes of solid waste in the city, which is collected and disposed of by the Municipal Corporation. The new vehicles are expected to contribute significantly to the processing of the waste and the reduction of pollution, as all the vehicles are of BS-6 pollution rating.

The vehicles have been equipped with GPS and Radio-frequency identification (RFID) devices to monitor their activities, and they will be used to collect wet and dry waste separately.

The wet waste collector vehicles and compactors for dry waste will be used to process 100% of the waste, and a total of 257 vehicles will be leased, including 108 mini vehicles, 93 wet waste collector vehicles, and 56 compactors for dry waste. The remaining vehicles will be inaugurated and brought into municipal service within a month, while the 518 vehicles of the Municipal Corporation are already operational.

The refuse collector vehicles, which are used for wet garbage, have a weight of 14 mt after collecting the waste, with a container capacity of 7 cu meters. The hydraulic system on these vehicles will help reduce human intervention. The weight of small vehicles after collection is 2.5 metric tons, while that of the compactor vehicle is 18.5 mt, with a 14 cusecs meter capacity container installed. The garbage will be collected from small bell carts and transported in a fully enclosed manner.

The Municipal Corporation has allocated a budget of ₹325 crores for the new vehicles over a period of seven years. The waste will be processed at 25 locations throughout the city, and the new vehicles are expected to enable the Municipal Corporation to collect the waste at full capacity. The initiative is a significant step towards improving the environment and cleanliness of Pune, and is expected to be warmly welcomed by its residents.
