PMC Repairs Dysfunctional CCTV Cameras From Pune City, Plans Regular Maintenance
In a bid to strengthen surveillance in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has completed repairs on most of the dysfunctional CCTV cameras installed in key areas. These areas include Tilak Road, Bajirao Road, Laxmi Road, and locations such as Swargate, Shivajinagar, and Deccan Gymkhana.
According to civic officials, the repair work, which began three months ago, was slowed down during the Ganeshotsav and Navratri festivals due to the erection of pandals and arches. Approximately 1,500 cameras were inspected, and those found to be non-functional or in poor condition were replaced.
While most repairs have been completed, work is still pending in areas where road-digging is required to replace cables. This is expected to be completed within the next few days.
The issue of defunct cameras was first brought to the PMC’s notice by eight police stations that monitor them daily. Upon further scrutiny, it was found that wear and tear, lack of maintenance, and damaged or cut cables had rendered many cameras non-operational.
To prevent such issues in the future, the civic administration, in coordination with the police department, plans to conduct regular upkeep of cameras. This move is expected to ensure seamless surveillance and prevent hiccups in the system.
Meanwhile, residents and shopkeepers are being urged to take precautions to ensure their safety. The city-based retailers’ association has asked its members to install cameras at their shops, covering the front portion. Shopkeepers are also providing footage to police and other investigating agencies whenever required.
Residents, too, are demanding better surveillance, particularly at night.
Former corporators and civic activists have also emphasized the need for cameras installed at strategic locations to have night vision facilities. With the PMC’s plans for regular maintenance and the active involvement of residents and shopkeepers, the city’s surveillance system is expected to become more robust and effective.
