Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has submitted a proposal to the Maharashtra government to make deductions in the concessions given to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) for laying electric cables under roads.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Sahebrao Dandge, Superintendent Engineer, PMC Road Department said, “The proposal has been sent to the standing committee for approval. It hasn’t been approved yet. PMC had started giving a hefty concession to the MSEDCL for laying electric cables underground. However, due to the digging work of the road for laying cables, citizens have to suffer unnecessarily. Due to several projects of cable laying of MSEDCL going on in Pune, we had given concessions to them. However, now that they are over, we have proposed to stop giving those concessions.”

As per further information shared by Dandge, Rs 12,000 to 12,500 per meter rate is charged from private companies to lay underground electric cables out of which all the government agencies such as BSNL, MNGL, Tata Telecom & others are given 50 percent concession on the per meter rate i.e. around Rs 6,000 per meter are charged. Hence, MSEDCL was given additional concession i.e. only around Rs 3,200 per meter rate was charged.

The PMC brought up the issue at a recent review meeting called by Maharashtra Deputy CM & Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar.

Rajendra Pawar, Chief Engineer, MSEDCL Pune said, “We haven’t received any final decision about this concession deduction as of now. In a review meeting with Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, PMC had put forth this point. MSEDCL is a government agency where we cannot have any kind of profit. We lay underground cables for the benefit of common citizens. If the expenditure of laying cables is increased, eventually it will burden the consumers as it will be charged indirectly to the consumers themselves.”

Rajendra Pawar has appealed to PMC through Pune Pulse not to deduct concessions for cable laying for MSEDCL.
