PMC Warns Punekars Of ₹1 Lakh Fine For Cutting Trees During Holi
Pune Municipal Corporation says illegal tree cutting or branch pruning for Holi will invite strict legal action
With Holi celebrations underway, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a strict warning against cutting tree branches or illegally felling trees for bonfires in the city.
The civic body has clarified that cutting, burning or damaging any tree without prior permission is a legal offence. Officials have said that those found violating the rules will face a fine of up to ₹1 lakh along with legal action.
Fine Under Maharashtra Tree Act
According to the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 2021, cutting a tree without permission can attract a fine equal to the value of the tree concerned. This fine can go up to ₹1 lakh.
The administration has noted that during Holi, there have been instances in some areas where branches are cut or trees are pruned to collect wood for the festival. The Tree Authority and concerned officials have been instructed to remain vigilant and monitor such activities closely.
Case To Be Registered On Complaint
PMC has stated that if any complaint regarding illegal tree cutting or damage to trees is received, a case will be registered immediately and action will be taken against the responsible persons.
Citizens have been urged to celebrate Holi in an eco-friendly manner and avoid harming trees.
Residents can report incidents of illegal tree cutting through the civic helpline and other complaint channels notified by the municipal corporation.
The civic body has appealed to Punekars to cooperate and ensure that festival celebrations do not cause environmental damage.
