Primary Teachers In Maharashtra To Stage Statewide Protest On September 25 Over Government Policies

In response to what they consider unfair policies by the state school education department, primary teachers across Maharashtra plan to hold a statewide protest on September 25. Their key demands include the cancellation of the recruitment of retired teachers under the new batch approval and contract-based system, which they argue is detrimental to the education system.

The teachers’ unions have decided to close all primary schools for the day and organize protest marches to district collectors’ offices. They accuse the state’s education department of ignoring the long-pending concerns of primary schools, students, and teachers under local self-government bodies.

Mahesh Sarote, a representative of one of the teachers’ associations, expressed frustration, stating, “The government has failed to address the unresolved issues of primary education. Additionally, decisions like eliminating a teacher’s position in some schools and replacing them with retired teachers on a contract basis are harming the students’ learning environment.”

Another issue raised by the protesting teachers is the exclusion of students without Aadhar cards from key educational benefits, including teacher pool determination. Many children are unable to obtain Aadhar cards due to a lack of birth certificates, and the unions argue that this government policy is aimed at closing down and privatizing local body-run primary schools, ultimately depriving students of their right to free and compulsory education.

A meeting of primary teachers’ associations was held in Pune, and it has been decided that starting Thursday, teachers will wear black armbands as a form of protest. On September 25, all teachers will go on leave and join district-level demonstrations.

Teachers are calling for immediate action to address their concerns and reverse policies they say are jeopardizing the state’s primary education system.
