Pune : When a 38-year-old assistant professor at a private college in Bhor tried to get a refund of Rs 325 for an online order for an undelivered saree through an app, she ended up losing Rs 3 lakh to cybercriminals.

The victim reported the fraud to the police in August after it had already happened. Following verification, on Saturday the rural Pune police of Bhor filed a formal FIR.

According to a Pune rural police officer, the victim claimed to have downloaded an online shopping app. She ordered a saree worth Rs 325 on August 8, but it was never delivered. Upon pursuing the issue, she was assured of receiving a reimbursement.

She phoned the app’s customer support after she did not receive her refund. When she called someone back, he said he was from Delhi. He said the refund would arrive soon.

In order to get her refund, the thieves advised her to download an additional app that granted them remote access to her phone. Through e-wallet transactions and the instant payment service, they collectively withdrew Rs 3 lakh.
