Pune: ₹6,000 Crore Elevated Corridor Proposed To Curb Accidents At Navale Bridge
Pune, March 25, 2026: In a major move to address the rising number of accidents at Navale Bridge, the Maharashtra government has proposed a large-scale infrastructure project worth approximately ₹6,000 crore. The plan, aimed at improving road safety, has been sent to the central government for approval.
The stretch of the national highway near Navale Bridge, spanning around 5 to 6 kilometres, has been identified as highly accident-prone due to its challenging terrain and heavy vehicular movement, particularly of large transport vehicles.
Minister of State Yogesh Kadam shared this information in the state assembly while responding to concerns raised by MLA Bhimrao Tapkir regarding the increasing number of mishaps in the area.
According to official data, the accident count in this stretch has shown a worrying rise—from 12 incidents in 2022 to 16 in 2025. Notably, a major accident in 2025 claimed eight lives, pushing the total fatalities for the year to 11.
To tackle the issue, the government has identified the construction of an elevated corridor as a long-term solution. The project aims to separate local traffic from highway traffic, thereby reducing congestion and minimizing the risk of accidents.
The state government is actively pursuing approval for the project from the Centre, highlighting its urgency given the recurring incidents.
During the assembly discussion, MLA Shankar Jagtap also contributed by offering technical suggestions to improve the proposed plan.
Officials believe that once implemented, the elevated corridor will significantly enhance road safety in the area and could help bring down accident rates drastically.
