Pune, July 20, 2026: A major discrepancy has emerged in a streetlight theft case in Pune, where the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) allegedly reported a significantly lower loss than the actual value of the stolen property.
According to information presented in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, 100 LED streetlights installed on Swami Vivekanand Road under the Bibvewadi Ward Office were stolen. Each LED streetlight was procured at a cost of ₹15,750, taking the total value of the stolen lights to ₹15.75 lakh.
However, when filing a police complaint with the Bibvewadi Police Station, the PMC reportedly stated that the stolen property was worth only ₹2.60 lakh, raising questions over the valuation mentioned in the FIR.
The issue came to light after BJP corporator Manasi Deshpande sought details from the civic administration through a written question. In its response, the PMC confirmed that all 100 decorative LED streetlights had been stolen.
The civic body had installed the decorative streetlights through a tender process, with each unit costing ₹15,750. Following the theft, the Bibvewadi Ward Office lodged a complaint at the police station on November 22, 2025.
Despite several months having passed, police have not yet identified or arrested the accused. According to officials from Bibvewadi Police Station, the investigation has been kept pending due to the absence of leads. They added that efforts to trace the culprits will resume once fresh evidence becomes available.
The report further states that even after the theft of all 100 decorative streetlights, no action has been taken against any civic official in connection with the incident. The administration has informed the Assembly that no departmental action has been initiated and no report has been submitted to the Municipal Commissioner regarding accountability.
The case has raised concerns over the handling of public assets and the apparent mismatch between the actual value of the stolen streetlights and the amount cited in the police complaint.
