Pune / Indapur : It has been a great journey for a 19 year old Indapur youth, Omkar Dattatray Bhongale, who dreamt of a career in the Indian Armed Forces. 

Omkar is among the 30 vacancies (boys & girls) to get selected from all over the country for the 10+2 Cadet (B.Tech) Entry Scheme of the Indian Navy and will be reporting to INA, Ezhimala on 14 Jan 2024. 

Omkar will undergo four year Engineering training at Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala and on successful Completion will get commissioned as Sub Lieutenant in the Indian Navy and will be appointed in one of the following branches :- Executive Engineering(including Naval Architecture)

Electrical. 

Omkar did his schooling in Vidya Prathishthan’s Indapur English Medium School Indapur and secured 92% in X CBSE Boards. He shifted to Pune for his further education. He joined Apex Careers two years XI+XII+NDA batch to pursue a career in the Defence Forces. 

He secured admission in Fergusson Junior College for XI & XII and secured 75% in XII HSC Boards. In spite of a lot of hard work, Omkar was not able to qualify the NDA written. However his 75% marks in XII (72% in PCM) and 81 percentile in JEE Mains, Omkar got shortlisted for SSB Interview of the 10+2 Cadet (B.Tech) Entry Scheme of the Indian Navy. He went to Bhopal for SSB and qualified. 

Omkar‘s father, Dattatray, is a farmer and his mother Vidya is a Primary School Teacher in at Vidya Prathishthan’s Indapur English Medium School, Indapur. Omkar has an elder sister, Chinmayee, who works in Hinjawadi – Pune. 

Omkar says, “It is through reading articles and watching videos of Indian Navy during the pandemic that I got motivated to join the Indian Navy. My personality got built up by various activities conducted at the academy like organising of Defence Awareness Programme and Sinhgad trek which gave me exposure of how one can organise an event and also built up my team spirit and man management skills. My parents and my elder sister have been a great support during my entire journey and I owe my success to them and my mentor Lt Col Pradeep Brahmankar and Rahul Mulje of the Academy.”

Omkar loves travelling. He has played handball at state level during his school days. He loves to play Cricket, Kabaddi and Basketball. He has been playing Chess with his father. 

Omkar’s mentor, Lt Col Pradeep Brahmankar says, “Omkar had a spark in him and he developed his confidence and communication skills by participating in all activities and worked really hard for his dream to come true”.
