Western Maharashtra is facing an unprecedented water crisis, leading to the deployment of 364 tankers to supply water to 334 villages.
Particularly hard-hit are Pune, Satara, Sangli, and Solapur districts, with a staggering 672,807 citizens reliant on tanker deliveries for their water needs. Satara and Pune bear the brunt of the scarcity.
In Pune, dire situations grip Ambegaon, Baramati, Daund, Haveli, Indapur, Junnar, and Purandar talukas, while Satara sees distress in Man, Khatav, Koregaon, Khandala, Phaltan, Y, and Patan talukas. Sangli’s Jat and Atpadi, along with Solapur’s Sangola, Mangalvedha, Madha, Karmala, Dakshin Solapur, and Malshiras talukas, also reel under severe conditions.

The gravity of the crisis is further evidenced by the closure of 22 wells in Pune, 93 in Satara, 41 in Sangli, and 24 in Solapur for water supply. The Divisional Commissionerate warns of a possible escalation in tanker deployment, anticipating worsening conditions.
Despite being renowned as a rain-rich region, last year’s heavy downpours haven’t spared the area from the current drought-like conditions. Crops wither under the scorching summer sun, and even irrigated lands struggle to sustain growth. The shortage extends beyond agriculture, impacting fodder availability and causing wells to run dry in all districts except Kolhapur.
